Oscar nominations 2021

History is made as two women are nominated for best director

'Mank’ Leads Academy Awards Noms As Female Directors Make History

The nominations, announced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas in London, were a triumph for Zhao and Fennell who received four and three Oscar nods respectively.

In a major breakthrough at Hollywood’s biggest awards, they are both up for best direction against David Fincher (Mank), Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round).

Just five women have been nominated previously in the category – Lina Wertmüller, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow and Greta Gerwig – in more than 90 years. If either win, they will join Bigelow who broke through with The Hurt Locker.

Fennell, whose talents extend to playing Camilla Parker Bowles in the television series The Crown, is also nominated for producing and writing the screenplay for Promising Young Woman.

Other actors to earn nominations include Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Anthony Hopkins (The Father) and Gary Oldman (Mank) as Best Leading Actor—with Ahmed becoming the first Muslim-American actor ever nominated in the category—and Viola Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday), Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman), Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) in the leading actress category.
